Pastor Chris Oyakhilome’s Believers Love World (aka Christ Embassy) made an official attempt to break the Guiness World Record for the largest chuch choir.

The current largest gospel choir according to the Guiness Book of World records “consists of 8,688 participants and was achieved by the Members Church of God International (Philippines), at the
Araneta Coliseum, Manila, Philippines, on 12 October 2015”.

The Pastor Chris Oyakhilome’s Christ Embassy held its Christmas Eve carol at the prestigious LoveWorld Conference Centre in Oregun parading many A-list Gospel Music stars and a mass choir of about 12,000 members.

Artists like Frank Edwards, Sinach, Eben, Joe Praize, the Rap Nation and a host of others performed several special songs during the course of the night. The carols however were rendered by a live Orchestra conducted by multi talented musician T-Sharp along with a mass choir who were dressed in diverse attires.

The members of the choir practically filled the auditorium only leaving a few seats for invited guests and other members of the church. The crowning part to an exceptional night of music and dance was when the Mass Choir rendered the world record breaking attempt song “You’re the Only One Like You” written by the Pastor Chris Oyakhilome who recently received doctorate degrees from his Alma Matter, Ambrose Alli University and another from the Benson Idahosa University.

The church hopes that the representatives of the Guiness Book of World Record after being satisfied that they met all the requirements would name their attempt as the new world record for the largest gospel choir. Representatives and auditors were seen at the entry and exit points of the venue taking a count of the choir members.
They were also seen at various sections within the hall performing their adjudicating duties. Pastor Chris and Christ Embassy with this record breaking attempt would be once again putting Nigeria on the world map positively.

Already, the daily devotional authored by the man of God called Rhapsody of Realities recently was acknowledged to be the 2nd most translated book in the world. The bible study guide is currently translated into 660 languages according to Wikipedia.

The Gospel Music Industry Vs The Gospel Music Ministry

Image result for gospel music ministry

There are thousands of artists (Major and Independent) that are not only involved in the Industry of Gospel Music but also the Ministry of Gospel Music. I, like many of you, have one time or another, intertwined the two as one but they are different yet they can come together depending on the vision of the artist. The word "Industry" refers to the production of an economic good or service. (Wikipedia). It's important to understand that the Gospel Music industry can involve ministry but ministry is not the focal point. The focal point is the marketing, distributing and selling of products for money. Without money, an industry would fall and that's why so many artists and some major labels in the past have fallen because of the lack of financial resources due to various reasons. The Gospel Music Industry is comprised of major Corporations, small labels, mom and pop record stores,( which are vastly dying) promoters, media, marketers, publicists, radio personalities and churches. The industry is primarily ruled and influenced by major labels who have the necessary funding to reach the average Gospel Music buyer with their products and services. The labels products are their artists and the products they create(CD's, DVD's etc) and depending on the success of those products other residuals are created such as royalties, merchandise etc.

The Gospel Music Industry does not have to follow any moral or religious code nor do the artists they promote. They concentrate on making music that people want to hear. When major labels sign artists, they look at the talent and marketability of the artist. If lifestyles were a prerequisite to being signed by a label then there would be no labels because most of the artists that we know and love have lifestyles that wouldn't measure up. There would be no industry. Just think, if you only bought products from corporations and artists with whom you knew were operating by biblical principals, how easy would it be for you to get what you wanted although it would be interesting to know how many corporate executes, who promote Gospel Music, actually know Jesus as their personal Savior. To the Gospel Music Industries credit, many songs, videos, songbooks and award shows have been beneficial to the everyday lives of Christians around the world. Gospel Music would not be where it is today if it weren't for the Gospel Music Industry but let's not spiritualize it folks. It is what it is. I'm in the industry and if I don't make money, I can't continue to make records and travel. Major planning and implementation makes major artists. Artists don't do well just because their anointed. Their are people in our local churches who are anointed and if they had the right business model behind them they would be selling records too.
The Gospel Music Ministry is different. When one is in the ministry of Gospel Music, their primary focus is the salvation and uplifting of souls. Many artists, major or independent, when they step on stage their goal is to minister God's music to the waiting audience or congregation. The ministry is not focused on money, although money is needed to survive, the ministering of music is essential to their mission in life. I would venture to say that most Gospel Artists make an attempt to minister Gods music every time they are offered an opportunity. However sometimes personal ambition and arrogance gets in the way. The Gospel Music Industry and Ministry can walk together if the artist desires it to be so. When you are sold out for God your integrity means more to you than money. You thrive off of ministry and you let the ministry drive your business and not vice versa. I hear some of you saying now, I would prefer ministry over industry well let me tell you that without an Industry you and I would not be exposed to the ministries of most of our wonderful Gospel Artists.

GOSPEL MUSIC TILL DATE

Image result for gospel music
Gospel music, which began during the 18th century, is probably one of the oldest and most popular music genres. This begs one to ask what makes gospel music so popular considering the religious topics it tackles. What makes it so popular is beyond the obvious fact that the songs and melody are catchy and easy to remember, since most gospel hymns do bear these characteristics. Gospel music is a rare type of music because it unites concepts culled from seemingly different cultures and produces a far more powerful sound that can evoke reactions from its listeners.
Gospel music initially started out as the music of rural African Americans who were forcibly brought to American soil during the height of the slave trade. These enslaved African Americans were indoctrinated with the ways of the white Americans, especially in religion which stressed the importance of obeying and respecting their masters.  Since most of the slaves were uneducated, they were taught using the technique of repetition which included the singing of church hymns. It wasn't long before these African Americans started infusing their own native music into the church hymns and learning how to play Western instruments like the guitar and piano.

Part of the reason why it became so popular with the slaves was because it was their way of uplifting themselves from their harsh living conditions. To this day, many people coming from different beliefs continue to be moved by the rousing and soulful performances by gospel singers and this is what makes it so popular to its audience. Somehow these heartfelt performances manage to bypass the different religious beliefs of people and give them common ground. It's not surprising since gospel songs typically feature lyrics that tackle overcoming adversities shared by everybody.
Another factor that contributes to the popularity of these music is the fact that many of the influential musicians of the 20th century, like Elvis Presley, Mahalia Jackson, Jerry Lee Lewis, Aretha Franklin, and Ray Charles to name a few, grew up surrounded by gospel music and eventually incorporated it into their own brand of music. Ray Charles is known to use the popular call and response pattern of gospel songs in his own compositions. You'd be surprised to know that the Soul Stirrers, one of the leading gospel groups during the 50s and 60s, were inducted in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame for their contribution in shaping the rock and roll genre.

There was a time when it was gospel music that influenced other genres that emerged from African-American culture like jazz, blues and R&B. Today it can be said that jazz, blues and R&B strongly influence the modern day sound of gospel music. The Father of Black Gospel Music himself, Thomas A. Dorsey encountered initial criticism when he dared to infuse jazz and blues with traditional hymn practices, yet that is the style that prevails today. Gospel music allows for the creativity of its composer to seep through the music. What makes it so popular is because it speaks to all ages and all generations.

Blind Boys of Alabama Founder Discusses the Grammy-Winning Gospel Group's Remarkable Legacy

The members of Blind Boys of Alabama, a terrific gospel group that first formed back in the 1940s, initially met at a school for the blind in a little town in Alabama called Talladega. They started singing together and quickly formed a group that specialized in both “jubilee” and “soul” gospel.

“When we hit the road, we just wanted to get out and sing gospel music,” says band leader Jimmy Carter. who brings the group to town on Sunday for a show at Trinity Cathedral. “We weren’t concerned with getting all the accolades. We weren’t even looking for that. Jubilee would be the equivalent to what rap is today. The only difference is that we were singing it and not talking it. And soul gospel is when your emotions come into play. You think about how good God has been to you and you put that into music. There were other groups out at that time that did that. The Soul Stirrers and the Pilgrim Travels. There was the Golden Gate Quartet. There was another blind group, the Five Blind Boys of Mississippi. They were out there too.”

During the '60s, the Blind Boys of Alabama performed at Civil Rights rallies; during the '70s, the band fell out of favor. But a key breakthrough came in the '80s as the band took part in a play called The Gospel at Colonus.

“It was a play concerning Oedipus,” explains Carter. “It was a Greek tragedy. We got that together and we took that play to Broadway. That’s when we really got exposed to all types of people. We could sing to all different types of people. That really was the turning point in the Blind Boys career.”

In 2001, the group released Spirit of the Century on Peter Gabriel’s Real World label. The album mixed traditional church tunes with songs by Tom Waits and the Rolling Stones, and won the first of the group’s various Grammy Awards.

“Peter Gabriel is very nice,” says Carter. “We would collaborate with just about anybody as long as we could deal with the music. You have to understand, even though we collaborated with many other people, we did not change our routine. We stuck to gospel music. That’s what we do. If the material didn’t have a gospel flavor to it, we couldn’t use that. It was a good experience. He was a very nice fella and he treated us good.”

In 2013, they worked with Justin Vernon (of Bon Iver) to release I’ll Find A Way, a collection of old and new tunes.

“Our manager was behind that,” Carter explains. “He came to use one day and asked us if we wanted to do an album with Justin Vernon. I said, ‘Fine. Who is he?’ After we met and got to talking and listened to his material, which was good, we did the recording at his house. He had a studio in his house in Wisconsin and we recorded in the bitter cold in November. You can imagine how cold it was, but he had a warm house and a warm house so everything went well. He had some songs that we knew but we hadn’t done them. The song ‘I Shall Not Be Moved.’ That’s an old hymn from the church. That song has been around for a long time. He brought that to us. He has some good stuff going on.”

The band’s most recent album, last year’s Talkin’ Christmas!, features a number of original Christmas tunes. “Christ Was Born on Christmas Morn” benefits from a ragtime piano melody and call-and-response vocals. The title track features a funk guitar riff and some old school organ. The grooves are so good, they appeal to Christians and non-Christians alike.

“This is our second Christmas record [after 2003’s Go Tell It on the Mountain],” explains Carter. “Our producer Chris Goldsmith, he was in charge of that. He wanted to do another one. We wanted to do it. And we wanted to do it too. We went to his house and started getting some songs together. We got [singer-guitarist]Taj Mahal on there. He is a great guitar player and singer and he’s a great musician. It was a privilege to have him on it.”

Carter says the guys have also recorded a Christmas song with Neil Diamond. And after decades of performing and recording, they still enjoy hitting the road.

“When you love what you do, it keeps you motivated,” he says. “When you hear that response from the crowd and know that they’ve been enjoying the music, it makes you want keep going.”
