Nigerian music director jailed 90 yrs for fathering six children with daughters

Nigerian music director jailed 90 yrs for fathering six children with daughters

An award-winning music director who has a Nigerian name was found guilty of fathering children with his daughters will spend the rest of his life in jail.
Aswad Ayinde, 55, of Paterson, NJ, was sentenced to 50 years in prison Friday after being found guilty in the second of five expected trials in which he is accused of repeatedly raping his six daughters, resulting in six children being fathered. Mr. Ayinde was found guilty in his latest trial of having intercourse with one of his daughters when she was as young as eight-years-old. The second sentence adds to the 40 year sentence Mr Ayinde received in a 2011 trial for sexually assaulting a separate daughter.
Aswad-Ayinde
Aswad Ayinde hides his face with a piece of paper during his sentencing
Mr. Ayinde is known for directing the music video for the Fugees 1996 smash hit ‘Killing Me Softly.’
In a disturbing disclosure during his first trial, Mr. Ayinde’s former wife said he was trying to create a ‘pure family bloodline’ by impregnating his daughters. He even claimed during a pre-trial hearing before the first trial that ‘the world was going to end, and it was just going to be him and his offspring and that he was chosen.’
In this latest trial, it was revealed that Mr. Ayinde began having intercourse with his second daughter from the time she eight-years-old, impregnating her four times.
As repoted by Mail Online the sexual assaults happened for almost 30 years until Mr. Ayinde and his wife separated, officials said. They occurred in numerous homes across northern New Jersey, even while the family was under watch of state child welfare officials, according to NBC New York. Some of the rapes even took place in an abandoned funeral home.
The family moving as far away as Florida to avoid investigation after case workers removed multiple children from the Ayinde household in 2000, resulting in Mr. Ayinde being arrested for kidnapping for trying to take them from state custody in a medical center, NBC New York reported.
He pleaded guilty to lesser charges and received a year’s probation – as he continued raping one daughter for at least another two years, according to officials.
The depraved father also beat and starved the girls using wooden boards and steel-toed boots for even ‘minor transgressions,’ Ayinde’s wife testified at the first trial.
Some of the children Ayinde fathered with his daughters were born in the home, with at least two babies who died in the home having been buried without notifying authorities or obtaining birth certificates, NBC New York reported.
Mr. Ayinde also fathered 12 additional children with an additional three women, according to court records
Ayinde’s tortured daughters were home schooled and isolated from other children, so as to keep the family secrets hidden, the station added.
With his wife too afraid to confront him, Mr. Ayinde carried out his evil plan without hindrance even while directing the music video for the Fugees 1996 breakout hit ‘Killing Me Softly, for which he won ‘Best R&B Video’ at the 1996 MTV Music Video Awards. The Fugees are also originally from Northern New Jersey.
Mr. Aswad Ayinde, whose was formally known as Charles McGill faces three more trials over the alleged assaults.

Great write-up by Jude uchella, Gospel Music and the world

Since the inception of gospel music up until now, several developments
have taken place. In other to aptly elucidate this, an understanding
of 'gospel music' is pertinent. Gospel music alias 'sacred song' is
the word of God portrayed with words of men, transformed into melody
or harmony, accompanied with musical instrument(s), or performed
without musical instrument(s): which can be described as “acappela”
i.e. Voice alone. In other words, it is the good news of the kingdom
musically delivered. Gospel music can be referenced to have started as
a result of the advent of the academic discipline of ethno-musicology
through a study of the two thousand - year history of church music,
and through a study of rural folk music traditions. Vis-a-vis the
African American experience, hymns were prominent, and most often than
not had an air of repetition. This was used as a device to ensure
everyone participated in the songs(especially those who could not read
- who were slaves). Then, most churches did not have the instruments
to accompany songs, but this did not impede gospel music in any way.
The advent of Radio in the 1920s largely contributed to the
propagation of gospel music which was eagerly welcomed by a teeming
audience. Shortly after the second world war, gospel music moved into
major auditoriums, and gospel music concerts became quite elaborate.
Since then, gospel music has adopted other genres of music like: hip
hop, soul, R n B, rock etc which today, are widespread. In this piece,
the trends of the nineteenth cum twentieth century gospel music will
be divulged and explicated; along with the present-day gospel trends;
and finally, what the future of gospel music holds.

The term gospel song was in no doubt brought about by
Phillip Bliss after he published the songbook, Gospel Songs. It boasts
of a selected collection of hymns which were much more easy to grasp
and sing in contrast to church hymns. To a large extent, it won't be
out of place to say that what we consider gospel music today(which
covers disparate genres of music), in those days were predominantly
hymns. I must admit that hymns have a way of communicating the word of
God to man. It is usually slow, rythmic, fraught with edifying lyrics;
and sung by choristers with angelic voices. This is unlike the myriads
of fast-paced music we hear today. However, that is not to say that
'fast music' is ineffective. To prove the efficaciousness and
sacrosanctity of these hymns, most of them are still sung in our
churches today. Another thing to briefly add is the enthusiasm and
moral uprightness of gospel musicians of that time. They were driven
by a divine purpose, and this lead to the great impacts of their
music. However, one cannot foolhardily opine same in relation to
gospel artists of this time.

Today's gospel musicians have explored different genres of
music which is clearly, an indication of evolution - a good one at
that. Now, there is, I think, no secular kind of music which does not
have a gospel alternative. This is indeed not unexpected as the
struggle for the souls of men is fiercer than before. However, the
'comma' noticeable in the camp of gospel musicians is the high level
of hypocrisy, moral poverty, insolence towards God's word etc; we see
this everyday acted out by some, or most of them. This is a pathetic
report. Some of them sing gospel songs with their mouth, not with
their heart. Theirs is to make money; and most times, if the 'trade'
is not monetarily encouraging, they opt for secular music - where they
are sure to make it big time. This is not alien to us, neither is it
hearsay - it is reality. To compound their woes, some of them lack
originality. They are copycats. They copy beats, lyrics...from secular
musicians...what blatant idiocy! Gospel music, I must admit has gone
from bad to worse compared to the ancient times, albeit, there are
quite a number of gospel artists who are true to their calling and
mission; they may be few but they are making a difference.

In conclusion, concerning the future, I think the state
of things in the world will get worse(because this is the end time)
but the word of God will continue to prevail through gospel music.
There may be changes in delivery and what have you, but the word of
God will remain constant and effective - his word never returns
without achieving the purpose for which it was proclaimed.

Deeper Life Suspends Pastor Kumuyi’s Son John and New Wife Over Wedding ‘Misconduct’

PM News, a Lagos based evening daily newspaper this evening reports that the leadership of Deeper Christian Life Ministries has suspended John Kumuyi, son of General Superintendent W.F Kumuyi, along with his Wife Favour, over their wedding ceremony on June 15 which had several ‘elements’ which were not in line with the beliefs of the ministry.
john-kumuyi-wedding
The suspension, according to PM News, was announced by Pastor Philip Oluwi, a prominent leader of the church, at the church’s monthly revival and miracle programme. The couple is facing disciplinary action for ‘the embarrassment they brought upon the church during the wedding’.
“The church, Deeper Life, remains committed to the biblical practice and standard of almost 40 years Christian dressing and still remains and does not compromise on Christian dressing. Hence deviation warrants the displeasure of God and and frown of the leadership of the church. John and Love are now under discipline.” Pastor Oluwi said.
Some offenses the couple are said to have committed include Love’s wedding gown which wasn’t such as would have been approved by Deeper Life (it was too short), her use of makeup (including a lip stick), and her hair which wasn’t natural. Other offenses are the hiring of a limousine to convey the couple after the wedding and a huge cake cut during the ceremony both of which conflict the church’s stance of moderation during wedding ceremonies.

The wedding which took place in Jamaica wasn’t conducted in a Deeper Life Church (as the church’s branch in Jamaica hasn’t received a go-ahead by the state to conduct wedding ceremonies), which has drawn criticism from members of the church in addition to sparking debate on social media in the past week.
Meanwhile John and Love Kumuyi have written the church to apologize over the incident. In a letter titled “Letter of Apology” read severally to the congregation by Pastor Jerry Asemota, who is the secretary of the church, the couple apologized to the congregation, the leadership and the General Superintendent, Pastor Kumuyi for their conduct during the ceremony. They have also taken full responsibility for their action, appealing for the disciplinary action to be reversed.
John Kumuyi is one of two sons born to Pastor W.F Kumuyi by his former wife, Aduke who passed on in April 2009 from an illness. Love Kumuyi (nee Odih) is said to be daughter of the National Overseer in Jamaica.

Music is not Ayefele's first love

YINKA AYEFELEMUSIC, NOT MY FIRST LOVE…
Initially, I didn’t have the passion for music. I thought I would become a banker or work in a firm as a clerk. I did not have the intention of going into music at all, even when I was younger as a chorister. I joined the church choir at an early age. My parents did not encourage me to go into music. It was later after the accident that I decided to take up music as my chosen career. I started music in December 12, 1999. It was at the Bitter Experience album launch. I did the launch to raise fund for my treatment. But people kept calling me to request for more copies of the album: “Ayefele we love that album and we need to get more of it”, they would tell me each time they called. And it encouraged me to do more songs and that was why I decided to really go into music. After the launch of the album, a lot of people deposited money for their copies. So, we quickly went back to produce more copies. When I saw the acceptance of the first work, I decided to go fully into music as my chosen career.
ABOUT MY ALBUMS…
I have 15 albums now. For me, there’s no favourite among them. What I do is that I put all my effort in each album.

MY DEFINING MOMENT…
Yes, the day that I had that accident was a turning point in my life. Probably if it did not happen, I would still remain in broadcasting and presenting my programmes on radio – ‘Piri Lologo Nji’, ‘Big Beat’, ‘Lagbo Faaji’ and ‘Temidire’ on as usual. But I would only be known in my jurisdiction there and not be known globally. I started presenting in 1989. That moment truly rewrote the story of my life. I give all glory to God almighty, because it is not easy to be successful in life and God has really been on my side, I must confess. Looking back at 13 years ago when I had the accident, I never knew that I would still be relevant till today. I did not lose hope and I keep doing what I know best (music) and that explains why I’m where I am today. I give Him the glory for bringing me this far.
PECULIAR CHALLENGES…
The challenges that Nigerian musician face is piracy, because we work very hard to produce these works but our efforts are not rewarded enough. I know that my music travel far and wide, but unfortunately for me, I cannot give account of the financial returns I get because of piracy. For instance, the enlightened people on the internet are defrauding us. If you go to the internet, you will see a lot of people selling my works and I don’t know how to nip it in the bud. They are selling it in America and European countries and getting well paid at my expense. That is the major challenge we are facing in the industry. We have been begging the federal government to intervene and invest in the music industry. Doing that alone will make the industry move forward and piracy can be silenced.

COUNTING MY BLESSINGS…
To God be the glory, I have won a lot of awards, I have a brand name that is solid. I have my own studio well equipped. I have travelled far and wide with my band boys. I usually count my blessings and give thanks to the almighty God.
WHAT I OWE MY LATE BENEFACTORS…
Without Kola Olawuyi and Gbenga Adeboye in my life, I may not be alive today. I was working with Kola Olawuyi by supporting his famous programme, Nnkan Nbe when he was alive. I produced the entire musical jingle he used on his programme and I produced theme songs for the programmes as well. For Gbenga Adeboye of blessed memory, I produced Choices, one of his albums. So, these people really exposed me one way or the other and I have a very good relationship with them till death. In my trying times, they stood by me; they supported me financially and morally. I can never forget them in my life and it is a colossal loss to the entertainment industry to lose these titans. Kola Olotu was the one who came to the hospital and when he saw me on my sick bed, he said, “Yinka, why can’t you put some songs together to see how we can raise some funds for you so that you can go abroad for further treatments.” He was the one who suggested it and thank God I heeded his advice and it worked for me and that is why I will forever remain grateful to Kola Olotu.
MY BACKGROUND…
Yinka Ayefele was born in Ipoto Ekiti in Ekiti State. I started my education at Our Saviour’s Anglican Primary School in Ipoti Ekiti, later to Ipoti Community Secondary School and I finished my secondary school education at Ipoti High School. I went in for Political Science at the Ondo State College of Art and Science, but unfortunately for me, due to financial incompetence, I was unable to finish. So, I moved to Ibadan to join the FRCN Ibadan national station and I had the opportunity of presenting. I later became an independent producer till I had the accident in December 12, 1997.

ROLE MODELS…
Late Orlando Owoh, King Sunny Ade, Dr. Ebenezer Obey and IK Dairo of blessed memory are the ones whose music inspires me.
HAPPIEST MOMENT…
My happiest moment is yet to come, I am still hoping for it. But I am happy every day. I have not accomplished my goals. I never knew music would take me this far and I’m grateful to God because I always remember that I am not the only musician in Nigeria, but my music is well accepted by millions of fans. One thing I want you to know is that God favours me a lot and that was why I give praise to Him every time. I will never give up on coming back on my feet, because I am not God and when God says yes, nobody can say no. God has said it to me that I will still work with my two legs through the men of God and I believe strongly in it. More so, I have seen the vision myself, I don’t know when it’s going to be and how it’s going to happen, but God confirmed it to me that it is going to come to past. And God is no man, He doesn’t tell lies and He honours His words more than His name. I’m patiently waiting for the day.

THE JONATHAN HANDSHAKE…
I have never dreamt of shaking any minister in my life let alone the number citizen of our great country, President Goodluck Jonathan. But it recently happened. To be honest with you, on that faithful day that the president shook my hand, what was in my hand fell down. This was because I was very nervous. To me, it was a great privilege and I felt so happy.
MY FAMILY…
We are fine, my wife and my kids; Ayomide and Olumide are doing great.
